The idyllic, canal-side corner of Maida Vale that houses Kateh at Warwick Place isn’t the most obvious place for a cultural melting-pot of culinary influences. However, Kateh has had an amazing first year, wowing critics and customers alike with its fantastic traditional Persian cuisine blended with influences from both East and West. Authentic favourites fresh from the grill are served with added elements of India, while mouth-watering Iranian stews are served up with European-influenced sides that form fantastic dishes that put Ottolenghi to shame (in terms of value, as well as quality). The forward-thinking venture is clearly a labour of love for Mother-and-Son management team Narges and Bijan Pourkhomami, reflected in the warm atmosphere and clean, chic surroundings that house a full complement of happy diners almost every night. SW was blown away by their Borani spinach and smoked aubergine starters and their fresh interpretations of classic stews like Gormeh Sabzi (Veal with fresh herbs and dried limes) and Fessenjan Gharghavol (Pheasant stew with crushed walnuts and pomegranate). Fellow converts wax lyrical about the modern desserts, which bring together Persian favourites such as saffron ice cream and Lime Rice Noodle Sorbet with Banoffee pie and an amazing baked-to-order date and walnut cookie. The wine list is minimalist but varied and offers up some great bargains. We heartily recommend a visit any night of the week to see a great restaurant breaking traditional moulds with fantastic cuisine.
