Fronted by a couple of pavement tables but easy to miss, the Star boasts an understated hipster atmosphere. As you’d expect on Portobello, the crowd is mixed, eccentric – old regulars mixed with hipsters and tourists during market hours. Every drink seems to be made to perfection by the likeable bartenders who help create the laid-back vibe. The cocktail menu was created by award-winning mixologist Jake Burger and is almost all lifted from the Jerry Thomas Bartenders Guide, which dates back to 1884. SW recommends doing a little good while having fun by ordering the Rock the Kasbah – a cocktail created in aid of the Elton John AIDS Foundation: vodka, lemon juice, mint tea syrup, orange flower water and egg white - £1.00 from each sale goes to the foundation. There is also an upstairs area availalbe for parties of 25-30. And…don’t forget to sample one of their famous homemade brownies, you won’t regret it.
